Tuesday’s Trailer Topic: Episode 7

Happy Labor Day, History of the Holiday, and a Special Thanks!

As Labor Day honors hardworking Americans, NCU would like to recognize the hard-working folks in the trucking industry.

A little history: Labor Day became a national holiday 130 years ago, but the roots of the holiday are a bit deeper – honoring workers began about 12 years earlier in 1882, when the first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City.

This first celebration was held at a time when conditions for workers were a far cry from where they are today. In the late 1800s, Americans worked 12 hours a day, including weekends. That first celebration was also a one-day strike – workers asking for better pay and shorter hours. These demands from the labor movement eventually gave us the eight-hour workday and five-day workweek of today.

Although New York had held an unofficial Labor Day celebration in 1882, five years later, Oregon was the first state to declare it an official holiday with Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York following suit. In 1894, Labor Day was declared a national holiday.

We would like to pay a special thanks to the hard-working people in our industry. From the Truck Drivers themselves to Logistics Coordinators to Maintenance Technicians to Safety Compliance Specialists and everyone in between – THANK YOU!

Trucking plays a vital role in the world we live in, so thanks to those working hard – We appreciate you!
