Minnesota Lawmakers Take Steps to Expand CDL Testing

Minnesota’s prior laws for CDL testing made it incredibly difficult for post-secondary schools to obtain the right to offer third party testing. They had to be able to offer 180 hours of instructional CDL training. Which meant that the number of places for CDL testing in Minnesota are few and far between, not to mention extremely busy. According to the article, in Minnesota alone, 10,000 people per year are trying to get their CDL license. With a limited number of facilities, you can imagine the long waits and frustration that all involved are experiencing.

Things are looking up however in Minnesota. On July 1st a bill was enacted to expand CDL testing. Per the new bill, any location that offers CDL training can also offer CDL testing. This will help alleviate the back log to obtain this license, as the need for truck drivers is still a concern. The truck driver workforce has been consistently declining of recent for several reasons; aging workforce, lifestyle, infrastructure challenges, etc. This new law may not ameliorate the aging workforce, but it will assist eager and qualified drivers to get out there without additional and unnecessary delays. Let’s face it, we need transport companies and their drivers out on the road, delivering necessary goods throughout the U.S.
